“I have an iphone & ipad, but all I would like to do is watch Apple TV on my TV which is connected via Xfinity. I have Xinfity cable & wifi. Can I purchase one of the HD boxes and somehow connect to my Xifinity 'cable' box (not wifi box) to watch?”

To the best of my knowledge, the short answer would be no. The AppleTV is a streaming box, meaning it has to be connected to the internet. There is a port on the back to connect via an ethernet cable, however I do not believe there is a way to hook into an Xfinity box. That said, once you connect to the internet, you can sign into your Xfinity account which will enable you to have access to a great many shows throughout the different streaming apps.
