Hdmi only
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You sure can as long as your Sony receiver has an optical "in" and you can assign it to be the sound source for video 1 (if it isn't already). If Apple TV is directly connected to your TV (is it bypassing the Sony receiver?) make sure you don't have a video cable for something else connected to video 1 if you choose to make video 1 the switchable audio source for the Apple TV. Doing this means having to switch the TV to the input for Apple TV and then switching the Sony receiver to video 1 for Apple TV in order to have the video and sound together. Does your TV have a spare HDMI input? Then connect Apple TV directly to the TV with a HDMI cable! And then do ONLY ONE of the following: 1) Connect the TVs optical "out" to the Sony receiver's optical "in" (of your choosing, ie: video 1), 2) Connect the TVs audio "out" (red and white RCA plug-ins) to the Sony receiver's audio "in" (red and white plug-ins of your choosing, ie: video 1). I have mine set up with option 1) right now. That way, anything I switch to on the TV automatically goes out the single optical cable to video 1 (for sound only) on my receiver and I never need to select any other audio input.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I suspect if you only connect the optical audio out from the AppleTV to your Sony receiver you'll only have the option of audio playback. I'm unsure how your receiver works to answer the "Video 1" option.
