My experience is distance depends on line-of-sight. If there are walls or other solid obstruction between the base station and the camera the distance is significantly less that the user manual indicates. There is a strength of signal reading in the "camera positioning" option in the Arlo App Device Utilities section that will tell you if your placement will have a good signal from the base station.
