Simply call your cable provider and ask them to email you a list of compatible modems. I called Optimum and told them that I wanted to buy my own modem and avoid the perpetual $4.95 monthly modem charge. They sent me the compatible list and then I called them back with the serial number (MAC #) of the modem I purchased through Best Buy, and they programmed it into their system. Very easy. I went to best buy with pictures I took of my modem with my cell phone, and they checked which modem was most compatible on the list. Just beware that Best Buy will price match the modem if you can find it on-line at a cheaper price, ONLY if it is not a third person supplier.
