QuestionDo I require a separate router or can one of these act as a router? I see the instructions and videos connecting to a cable modem or another router, but I connect my current router directly to the Verizon demark and it works. Can I do this with these?

QuestionOnce I installed the mesh wifi, the general wifi connectivity performance for most of house improved. However, the internet in my kid's room on the opposite end of where the router is has gotten much worse. how can i improve that room's connectivity?

- Answer I imagine that the unit connected to the cable modem is fixed but you can move the other unit to a more centralized location or at least closer to your kids room

- Answer Both will cost you a bit in a speed test. AiProtection not so much (~25 to 50 Mbps) but QoS can have a large impact (~100 to 200 Mbps) depending on how you have it set up

QuestionI installed this system and my only problem is my 2012 MacBook Pro somehow loses the connection and wants to use the internal ip of 169.254.xxxxx So far the only way to get the MacBook to get an ip from the router is to reboot it. Anyone else have this?

- Answer It sounds like your Mac is defaulting to another network. Try going into Wi-Fi settings and ‘forget’ existing networks listed. Then when it asks, remember the new network.

QuestionWill this work in mesh with RT-AC5300 in a mesh configuration. I don't mind to keep the old as an access point as long as it can be used in as a meshed node. I don't to lose that network device being sitting idle or disposed off because I bought this.

- Answer The vendor does state the AC5300 as compatible with AIMESH. Something to be aware is the AIMESH nodes with 3 wireless bands 2.4Ghz,5Ghz-1,5Ghz-2) will use the 5Ghz-2 band as backbone to main station unless the ethernet backbone is connected.

QuestionSeveral reviews state that guest network is very limited range because the signal is only from one base unit, not the satellite. Has Asus fixed this problem with firmware update yet?
