Our first one lasted about 6 months

You'll want to change the filter after 6 months of use. The unit has an internal timer. When the unit has been on for a total of 6 months, the light on the unit will change color to let you know that it's time to change.

Not sure. I bought an extra one. We put the unit away before we had to change the filter. GIven that the smoke had finally dissipated. We are ready for the next fire!
