Besides price how does the new model compare to the older one at 179? One is 179, the newest is 199,what do I get for the additional price. What usable benefits does the new model have, compare?

Great question! The newest model (which is the one I purchased) has a better battery life, it can now be charged with any microUSB cable (you can only charge the older model with the Bose cable), it has a built-in microphone so you can use it as a speakerphone, you can play/pause/skip songs using the new button on the top of the speaker, and it provides you with audio feedback (for example it talks to you when your device is connected). I like the newer model much better than the previous one, but that's just my opinion. Hope this helps!

This model has a Speakerphone facility which is extremely good. Also, if you do not want to use the base charger, you can use the micro USB input to charge the speaker directly.

You can also use the micro USB to upgrade the software, for any bluetooth compatibility related matters.

Sound quality is about the same, but battery life is longer, and comes with a charging base. Also uses a micro-usb charger, so any micro-usb cord will work to charge it. The old model used a proprietary cord. So this, along with the charging base, allows you to keep one cord plugged into its "home" wherever you choose to put it, while any other micro usb cord can be taken out and about when you travel anywhere with it (there are USB ports both on the charging base and on the unit itself). I think it makes the extra $20 worth it.

Just bought this unit for my girlfriend; she has been looking at the original Soundlink, so I made sure to research the improvements:
-3 hours additional battery life
-USB chargeable, instead of the proprietary AC charger
-Bluetooth improvements, e.g. supports pairing of additional speakers, simplified pairing, etc.
-Added microphone

The new model provides slightly improved sound, speaker phone capability, revised control buttons, and micro usb charge chord. Worth the price difference especially if you will use speaker phone feature.
