I don't know the answer to your question and I cannot find anything definitive in an online search. I've had this machine for a couple of months now. I can tell you that there isn't anything in the manual about a 3-way valve nor about back-flushing the machine. Here is the complete manual online: https://brim.coffee/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/50019-Brim-19-Bar-Espresso-Maker_IM.pdf I'm a newbie, so perhaps my results come from inexperience. But I can tell you: I am not able to pop the pucks out whole. They are not soupy/liquidy, but they are wet, like wet sand, and they seem to stick to the basket. I usually just run some sink water into the basket and it easily rinses out. Since I have a garbage disposal, I then wash the grounds down the drain. If I "overfill" the basket (it's unclear to me how high to fill it, as there is no marker and I do not have a food scale), there are a lot of wet grounds to clean off the head after I'm done pulling my shot and I've removed the portafilter, and a gob might fall off and land on the catch tray after the filter is removed. If I fill it less, I have fewer grounds to clean off and there are no gobs of spent grounds. I have not adjusted the water flow because I don't have any experience with that, but according to the manual, you can adjust the amount of water that comes through a shot. That might affect how dry the puck is. I have not tested it. After I'm done, I always wipe it clean and run a water shot through to keep the head clean. I've been using the machine daily. The noise is probably the biggest drawback. I don't know if it's customary for espresso machines to be so loud. I would say it's quieter than a full-sized vacuum cleaner, but louder than a handheld vacuum cleaner.
