“How does it scan to a file? When it scans to a file on a PC, does the PC have to be running Brother software to receive the data and write it to a file or can the printer independently just write to any folder shared on the network as provided by the operating system (e.g., Windows using SMB)?”

• As far as I know it needs brother software. The software included sets up the printer for scanning and allows you to choose where to save. Seems like you are asking if you can simply scan on device and have it send and save to a pc. Not the way it works afaik.

• The initial setup to allow the scanner to write to the PC does require the Brother software. It may be possible to scan to an FTP server without installing any software, though.
