• The ink cartridges are interchangeable between both models. The MFC-J995DWXL comes with up to 2 years of ink in the box and the MFC-J995DW comes with up to 1 year of ink in the box.

• The XL holds the bigger cartridges, and they can't be used in this model. But this model has large cartridges. We use it at home and haven't replaced ink in over a year. Love the printer.
