No hub was needed. You can control is from the C by GE app or by a smart assistant (I use Alexa). See my review for an easy set up guide, otherwise it's a headache

Our bulbs are Bluetooth-enabled and can be set up in the C by GE app and controlled over a local Bluetooth connection without a Bridge device just as long as your phone is within Bluetooth range of them.
