• When I plugged it in they automatically lit up white. If you dont use the app you'll never be able to change the color.

• Absolutely. In their default configuration, they will turn on to 100% white without any smart controller. However, you REALLY miss out on a lot by not having a Google Home or smart phone to control all the colors with!!

• You would need to use the app to control the light strip. It is also possible to link them to a Google Home speaker via the Google Home app and control them by voice.
