Technically, there is no SSD. Rather, there is a 16GB Intel Optane device that acts as a fast cache rather than as a separately addressable hard drive or SSD. The Optane device occupies the one and only M.2 slot on the motherboard. Thus, if you want to add a large, fast SSD you either have to remove the Optane device and replace it with an M.2 SSD, or you can install a slower SATA SSD and continue to use the Optane device as a fast cache which works quite well (this is what I did).

I have this exact computer and upgraded to an SSD once it arrived making the Intel Optane useless (for an SSD). However, the poster was incorrect when he said "the only M.2 slot on the motherboard". The Asus Z370 Pro4 motherboard has, in fact, x3 M.2 slots. One of the M.2 is key E (for wifi) and there are also x2 Ultra M.2 slots. I have an Evo Pro 960 1TB in one of them. Unless your computer uses another motherboard (I purchased mine through Adorama, the GLC5402OPT). Anyhow, SSD is really inexpensive for a 1TB, I would definitely (if you can do so) opt for upgrading to an M.2 drive. Standard SATA SSD runs 500-600mb/s, the NVMe M.2 SSD between 3200-3500mb/s.
