Any USB external hard drive should work and with plug and play, they should connect and be immediately usable. I have an Pioneer external drive that plays Blue Rays and plays and records DVDs/CDs and it works perfectly.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.1st off, Win 8 and above do NOT include a DVD codex to decode DVD movies. That being said, because of the speed of DVD reading/writing there is no point in getting faster than USB2. There are external USB2 DVD read/write drives all over in the $20 to $25 range. Most will do fine. Keep in mind that these drives get power from the laptop so they Will affect battery life.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Most any USB 2.0 or 3.0 external drive will be fine. I bought a Samsung SE218GN/RSBD USB 3.0 DVD writer and it works great. Blu-Ray is also a possibility if you are interested but I did not want to spend that much right now. Maybe later. I have attached a few possibilities. You may want to look for one that also comes with software but Windows can handle most needs itself and there are plenty of free options online that will beat most bundled crippleware that you would get with the drive. Hope that helps point you in a direction to look.
