• You can do both. If you upgrade to Windows 10, media player won't play dvds anymore, but the preloaded cd/dvd copying software will... if you update the drivers.

• Yes. I uninstalled all the factory installed software and put on the free VLC media player which plays DVD's and MP4 files. This laptop works well for watching redbox movies.
