I had a similar issue in getting my 4400H set up with 2 zones. If you have a 7.x setup or less, you can try what I finally did to get at least zone 2 working.
Section "Connecting 7.1-channel speakers: Bi-amp connection of front speakers" (page 65 in my copy of the owner's manual) shows how to connect a bi-amp setup for your front left and right speakers. Simply hook up the Zone 2 speakers the the Height2 left & right outputs, then configure the amp assignments to be 7.1ch (Bi-Amp) and all should work (as least for zones 1 and 2).
