“Do you have to power the mirror through the cigarette lighter or could you power it up by wiring directly to the fuse box/battery? I don’t like the idea of having a wire from the mirror to the cigarette lighter which is located inside a console.”

You will need the wiring kit if you want to connect to the fuse box.
