You would have to really overcook something for it to start smoking. In normal course, I haven't seen any smoke but it does put out heat and the odor of what your cooking. I have located mine on the lanai ( porch), since I live in Florida where it's warm to begin with. A pro-tip would be to not run it with the temperature at maximum every time you use it. My usual setting is 370° F. It takes about 10 minutes to cook a serving of chicken strips or french fries or an egg roll. I only put in a single layer when I'm cooking which doesn't require any shaking. I put my egg roll up on a homemade wire mesh so the bottom isn't soggy.
