“Could you connect a phone to it by a usb port and how do you have it powered or charged? It said it used batteries and that's a big no no so I'm wondering if there is another way?”

This does not use batteries. It uses a USB cable, which connects the stand to your laptop. The stand comes with the USB cable. The stand also has 2 USB ports, one is used to power the stand while the other can be used to charge your phone/devices. I’ve attached a picture
