• You might have a defective one because my iPhone doesn't do that.

• I wouldn't recommend charging the iPod and using the transmitter at the same time. Especially with Apple products.

• Most common cause would be the cable your currently using may not be getting a good connection. Also there is a fuse at the tip which you can unscrew and check if that is the cause. Or if all else has not yielded results you can always do a soft reset on your device.
