If the width of the AC is 18.5 inches, why would it not fit in a window that is 20 inches?

Hey there! Thank you for your inquiry. The width dimensions required for the window installation would be different from the width of the air conditioner, because the adjustable sides have to be factored in. We hope this helps! -Thanks!-

The two side panels are to wide to fit in that small an opening. You maybe could install by leaving panels off and filling space with something else
