You can choose, running, cardio, or other when you're working out. Once you choose one the heartrate monitor is on continually. And it will track calories burned as well. It will also track the intensity of the workout based on your heartrate.

What you will get is a nice chart of your heart rate data, calories burned, steps taken, etc. However, what must be considered is the activity you are recording. Movement is recorded as "steps", and the device is unable to really distinguish between swinging a racket and running, or participating in an aerobics class for that matter. So take it for what it is, that your "steps" are an overall measure of your activity level, and not JUST how much you walk or run. In this way the heart rate sensor is nice because you can record a bike ride, and still get an idea of how many calories you burned even though you may not register any steps.
