“is the heart rate on always or do you have to look for it”

• You can set the hr to main display. Every time you look at the band you will see it. You can also customize the band display. I have mine set to time/date then swipe left to see hr monitor and swipe right for steps

• You do not have to look for it, the optical heart rate monitor is always on, unless you turn it off. The light is on the underside of the watch, so it is not noticeable. You can see the actual heart rate numbers on the face of the watch. \tw/

• Heart rate is always on and active. You can set it to your main home screen or whatever you want with all the options. It's pretty amazing controlled by the app.
