Hi MsryAlice- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing our GE® ENERGY STAR® 17.5 CU. FT. TOP-FREEZER REFRIGERATOR GIE18GSHSS! Yes, a water line is required for the factory-installed icemaker. Also, the door swing is reversible for flexible installation (it is assembled with the hinges on the right- opens left to right). Also, if a water line is not available, you might be interested in GE® ENERGY STAR® 17.5 CU. FT. TOP-FREEZER REFRIGERATOR GTE18GSHSS without the factory- installed icemaker (It is equipped for an optional icemaker IM4D sold separately). Thanks for checking with us!
