My guess is that without the hot light feature working, you could accidentally burn yourself. Likely no other safety issues would be involved. I would check with my repair person just to be sure. While you make one last check you may want to see if the light could be replaced, which would save you lots of money. Also since the appliance is over 20 years old, you may want to replace it and enjoy if for 20+ more years!

We hate to hear you’ve had an issue with the hot surface indicator light not going off when the cooktop has cooled; we know the possibility of that indicator not working correctly may be worrying. We would need the full model number to review your situation specifically, but we can advise in general the indicator light is meant to be lit when any radiant element is turned on, and after it’s turned off until the surface has cooled to approximately 150 degrees F. Disconnecting the unit from power for a couple minutes before reconnecting can help in some cases, as this resets the electrical components. If you continue to have the indicator light problem and are concerned about a possible safety issue, you may want to consider contacting our service department at 1-800-432-2737. If you’d like to reach out to us, here or over social media, with the complete model number of the cooktop, we would also be happy to review this matter further. We hope this is helpful, and we’re always available for questions or concerns. All the best! -Sarah@GEA
