No you do not have to use special soap and I am very happy with the washer, I wasn't happy with my last one which didn't have the full agitator and this one I'll have to say is just really over the top great it's everything you really could meet in a washer has a lot of room and I love the feature that you can fill it up with a little more water if you want to

Most soaps today have the HE symbol on them. Don't buy expensive special soaps, just check your current product.
