“Is it possible to get the grate *instead* of the griddle? I never use a griddle and am not keen on spending the extra $50. Wouldn't it make more sense to offer the grate as the standard and the griddle as an add-on accessory?”

Nope. You have to buy the grate. I wondered about the griddle also. But, have found I do use it often - reheating biscuits and quick breads, making grilled sandwiches, and even fried an egg!! The griddle is super easy to clean. Also, the edges of the grate are not "even" with the rest of the cooktop...so no "sliding" between burners. Good Luck. I find this is a really excellent range for the price.
