Hi TXJ - The downdraft exhaust system effectively pulls smoke and steam out of the kitchen through ducting installed in the cabinet under the cooktop. Ductwork must be vented to outside. It cannot be recirculated (duct-free). This requires a duct under the cabinet that sends the exhaust outside. (See attached photo)
