“Friend has a 5 burner GE Profile cooktop, I have a 4 burner. Mine is 15 years old. I am building a new house and want GE Profile because I am happy with mine. My friend says the grate is too far from flame. Is there a difference in the 4 and 5 burner?”

Yes your friend is right , the flame is little far from grate but otherwise it is good to have 5 burners because you get more room when cooking more than 1 dish
