  • QuestionWhat does a Point Range Extender do? I’m looking at getting a Google Mesh set up and don’t know if this is something I would benefit from. I have a two-story house and want to cover both it and an outbuilding which is close to be house and separate.

    • Answer Adding Wifi points depends on your Wi-Fi needs. Ideally, Nest Wifi router can cover up to 2,200 sq ft and 1,600 sq ft for one Nest Wifi point. But where they are placed, the layout of your house, and physical obstructions can impact the total coverage. Keep in mind that barriers like heavy furniture and walls made of thick concrete or brick can influence Wi-Fi performance. For an estimate of how much Wi-Fi coverage you’ll get with Nest Wifi and a guide to how many Wifi points you need check here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7182840 A mesh network is a group of devices that act as a single Wi-Fi network; so there are multiple sources of Wi-Fi around your house, instead of just a single router. They can provide better coverage over a wider space. These additional Wi-Fi sources are called points. All points are connected to each other wirelessly. As long as they are within range, they can communicate with one another wirelessly without the need for a router or switch. This allows for fast and efficient data routing. • QuestionDoes this extender have to be hard wired into the main router or will it just pick up the WiFi from the main router?

    Asked by Vinny.

    • Answer This is a Nest Wifi point, and is not compatible with 3rd party routers to form a Wi-Fi mesh network. It is only compatible with Nest Wifi routers and points and Google Wifi points to create a whole Wi-Fi mesh system. Also, Nest Wifi points can't be hardwired since it doesn't have ports for an Ethernet cable.
