It is preferred! We use ours sporadically on our RV and each time I have to reinstall it. Also, just tried it at a campground with an encrypted wifi and it WILL NOT WORK! I call customer service and they couldn't help me. Great - that's what I bought it for. Very disappointed!!!!

The Nest cameras are pretty easy to set up. You scan a code from the box and then follow the instructions. Basically need to find your network, then mount or position the camera. There is a magnetic mount, screws if you're going to attach it to a wall. I've had one running about a year with no trouble.

No, you don't have to, but if you are not familiar with setting up this kind of devices, then it is recommended, so they will do the work for you and set it up to your needs. I hope this help.
