You would need permission from the person that pays the internet service provider, or you would need to pay for your own internet service provider. You can not just buy a router and expect free internet..

You don't have to have another, pre-existing Wifi system for the Google Wifi to work. What you need is an internet connect and a modem. As long as you can plug this to an ethernet port, you should be able to have your own personal Wifi system. This single device should cover approximately 1500 sq ft of space.

This is not standalone Wi-Fi. This only acts as a extender for a current Wi-Fi service.
