“In reading the installation instructions, it appears that I need to purchase additional equipment. I was hoping to just "plug in" speakers. Help!!!”

All you basically need is a power amplifier with speakers for your sound and just plug the two red and white RCA wired male plugs, that came with your CD player, to your amplifier's two red and white female jacks for your sound to be amplified. Then plug in the power cords of both units to your house 120V power receptacle and play. That's all that there is to it.
