Windows laptops in S mode are locked down to only run apps from the Microsoft Store, meaning they cannot install or boot Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Puppy Linux directly. However, you can switch out of S mode (this is a one-way process) to install Linux alongside Windows. If you're looking for a lightweight Linux experience without modifying your system, you could also try running Linux from a live USB without installing it.
