Openoffice has its own file structure, but will both read from and write to files that have docx, xlsx, and pptx extensions.
Openoffice isn't totally compatible with Microsoft Office, but issues probably only arise if you are doing something fairly esoteric. Basic word like documents spreadsheets and presentations can normally move back and forth pretty smoothly
The menus on openoffice programs look similar to but not identical to those Microsoft uses.
