I've had similar issues. My wireless keyboard/mouse are attached in the rear and work fine. Of the USB ports in the front, only the topmost one will recognize anything plugged in. HP put the additional ports there as illusions to give the appearance that the computer has more capabilities than it actually does. It looks nice when you are reading the specs online, it just doesn't work when you purchase it and get it home. While multiple working USB ports would be nice I don't use them much so I didn't bother with the hassle of having to return the computer and hope the next one I purchased wasn't as bad. Just made a note to self...next computer will NOT be HP.
