The research I came up with is that it has two (2) internal SATA drive bays & one external optical DVD/CD drive bays. One of SATA drive bays has the 1 TB HDD (7200 rpm). The other can be loaded with an SSD if desired.

I stand behind my original reply, based on a fair amount of research on the subject. I finally bought this laptop as a great deal on an "open box" deal. To be very clear, this was the HP Envy 17M-AE111DX. After just a couple of days of initial configuration, I purchased a 1 TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD. I used Acronis to 'clone' the OEM 1 TB HDD. I went all out to do this right..... My plan being to swap the new SSD with the OEM HDD and then put the original HDD into the 2nd drive bay. But after meticulously removing the back cover, I discovered that indeed there is NO 2nd (SATA) / empty drive bay!!! :( Others have since provided the correct answer about this. I feel really bad about leading others down the wrong path. I'm just going to get an empty external drive enclosure and go the external storage route by using the OEM HDD. But I just had to give my "rest of the story". Incidentally, for those looking to get into the innards of this machine, please make sure that it is this model cuz removing the back cover has some interesting "twists" to get it apart without damage. Btw, with the OEM HDD, it took Windows 10 minimally 1 full minute to boot up and even a notable time to shut down. Yet, with the new SSD, boot times were under 10 seconds! And shut down was nearly instantaneous! Kind regards and again sorry for the bum steer!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not 2 drive bays, but it does have a m.2 slot in addition to hard drive bay and you can put os on m.2 drive. This made my system really fast and was worth the upgrade.
