• It turns off by itself if you're in bright light or if you haven't touched the trackpad/keyboard for a little bit. This isn't changeable to my knowledge.

• The F4 button is the backlight button - press once for high, again for low, and then a third time for off. As far as i can tell there is no "always on" option and it should turn off within a few seconds after you're done typing.
