“For the battery icon in task bar - when plugged in, should the 'white bar' be moving to show it's charging? I just see the battery icon with the 'plug' but it's not showing it's charging...it just shows "xx% avail (plugged in)". Did I get a bad one?”

You didn't get a bad one! The white indicating bar inside only moves to show the amount it is charged when unplugged. The plug symbol inside is what indicates that it is being charged.
