Yes, it can be placed on its left hand side (looking at it from the front). The optical drive would actually be easier to access as a "top loader" than from the side. Just be careful to support the drive tray from the bottom with your hand when loading discs, as it is flimsy and wouldn't take much downward force. Also, the motherboard may collect more dust as it will be horizontal (instead of vertical). Cleaning the motherboard and CPU fan may be required more often with canned air. The main HDD should operate properly as it would if removed and put in an external drive enclosure. CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING ON TOP OF THE COMPUTER WHEN PLACED HORIZONTALLY AS THE MAIN COOLING INTAKE VENT WOULD BE ON TOP AND NEEDS TO BE UNCOVERED FOR PROPER COOLING! I have not tried placing the HP Pavilion 550-a14 on its side, but these are the only issues I can imagine. Should be OK.
