The amount of ram has more effect on how many programs you can have open at once. This laptop comes with 8 GB stock, so less than your current one, but it can be upgraded up to 64 GB if you're willing to do it yourself.

- Answer You would need to purchase an external cd-rom/dvd drive. You would then plug the drive into your laptop's USB port.
