Usually this means one of the factory components failed and the item was returned to the retailer. The retailer provided a refund or exchange on the spot and the unit was returned eventually to the manufacturer. The manufacturer diagnosed and replaced the component and returned it to market with a "refurbished" title attached. Sometimes these are bulk leased items, so that could account for some wear and tear. Cosmetic damage is typically not an item of concern in returning the item to market unless it effects the overall function of the product.
