“I sometimes go 3 months or more between printing things. Will this be a problem?? Will the toner "settle" or become unusable in any way in that amount of time??”

No, this should not be a problem, because I've had occasions when I did not print on my Laser Printer for over a year, and it still printed fine, when I forwarded documents to print on it again. There should be no problem with the toner, due to lack of use for several months.
