I own these: good sound. Yes, the remote is integral to the operation, it is the only way to switch input mode.

Please try again later.From experience if the remote is damaged or lost, you can use the volume control on the side to also control inputs and turn on and off the speakers. Some universal remotes might work, but if you have a spectrum remote such as the R122 none of the codes I have tried have been successful. Results may vary by universal remote brands.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is an on/off switch on the side of one of the speakers. So yes you can switch them off without the remote and control the volume as well.
