“Can my "OLD" edition controller, work with the "extension" or do I need another controller? The ends are not the same in either case.”

nope. the old edition (circa 1980's) will not work. only the nes classic controller and some of the wii classic controllers will work. that being said, there is an adapter on amazon that allows you to use the old edition controllers w/ the nes classic, but that adapter is wireless and wireless nes classic controller = delayed response time = certain death in super mario bros

The only controller that is designed to work on the classic edition besides the one that came with it is the original wii wired controller that has the same c shaped connector. Hope this helps

There is a converter that could plug in between the extension and the controller, but it costs just as much as the new controller, and makes it a little more clunky. However, if you're reading this at the time when the nes classic and controllers are almost impossible to get, the converter is actually available.
