• YES IT CAN, NO PROBLEM. DVI AND HDMI ARE SAME SIGNAL, HDMI BETTER, STRONGER, SMALLER CABLE AND HAS AUDIO. AN ANALOG CABLE TO DVI/HDMI WOULD NEED A CONVERTER WIRED IN THE CABLE IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE SIGNAL. BUT DVI AND HDMI ARE SAME IN PRINCIPLE SO YOU DON'T NEED ANY TYPE OF CONVERTER IN THE CABLE. BUY IT ONLINE THOUGH, MUCH CHEAPER COST WISE.

• I used it to display HDMI out from blu ray player on my older tv with dvi input & it works fine. You are correct that audio is a separate connection.

• The cable should be able to be used either way. I'm using it DVI out to HDMI in, but I don't see why you wouldn't able to reverse this, since it's just a display.
