“It is advertised as genuine leather outer shell. The package says synthetic leather outer shell. Which is it?”

It is NOT genuine leather. On the back side of the packaging it states it is imitation leather.

It appears to be a good grade of synthetic. I bought one of their earlier cases for an iPhone 4 and it was genuine leather. They need to update their advertising text.

Feels synthetic to me. Doesn't matter though. For the price and the way it protects my phone, synthetic is good for me.

To me, it's synthetic, but it is very nicely lined and seems well made. I would tend to believe what it says on the package. Personally, I don't care because the price was right, it fits and holds my cell perfectly, and it seems like it will last.
