will this work for any brand external hard drive? null

If the drive will fit in it, then it will work. I'm not sure if all external hard drives are of similar size or no, but it will work for a Western Digital 4 TB external hard drive.

It will work with any brand Drive as long as it is not over 5" X 3 1/4" and up to about 1" thick or less.

I have purchased three different brands of portable external hard drives, and they have all fit in this case.

Not sure about any brand, but it works great for my Western Digital Hard Drive, and also for a Toshiba Hard Drive that I own.

I don't know about ANY drive. It does fit a WD - My Passport 1TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - Black well.

This Insignia case should fit any 2.5” form factor notebook/laptop drive with external enclosure. As others have said if the drive will fit within the deeper compartment than you are good to go. Some models of enclosed 2.5” hard drives may have an enclosure that makes the drive slightly too large to fit inside the Insignia case such as older model Toshiba external 2.5” drives.

It can only contain a smallers sized HD. In my case it's WD passport size.
