This case only covers the back of the phone.

It's not soft exactly. The best I could say is it's soft-ish. It's hard but flexible. It protects the back and the sides, but for the front, the screen side, you'd need to get the thin glass screen protector. The sides are where you'd be most likely to have impact if you were to drop your iPhone, and this case does a good job protecting your phone when you drop it. I've recommended 3 brands of screen protectors you could look at. I have the Zagg on one of my phones.

There is no front on this case, only a back. I use zagg invisible shield on the front because it’s the best protection out there for iPhones.

It is soft but only covers the back of the phone and the sides. (Including the power and volume buttons.)
