I tested mine on an outside plug and it worked fine. I wouldn’t suggest using this if it could be exposed to rain.

Direct sunlight might not bother it - unless you are in an area that it will melt. So your biggest issues would be with the moisture. If you can 100% protect it from the wet and damp conditions, you should be fine. Without seeing your patio setup, and knowing how "covered" it is, it's really hard to answer your question directly. You might be able to setup a large plastic cover to cover this plug setup, but a standard in-use bubble cover for a single duplex outside receptacle wouldn't work as it's too wide to fit in the cover. If you have a double duplex, it might fit, but you lose a receptacle as again the width will cover a second receptacle. End advice: I'd stick with your inside receptacles for this device and buy a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected timer for the outside lights that are listed and labeled for that function. You'd want the GFCI protection for anything outside (again wet/damp locations), and not all houses came with that - depends on when your house was built, or when the outside receptacle was installed. Electrical codes have evolved over time and existing conditions did not have to be upgraded when the code changed, also when homeowners added their own electrical, they might not have been aware of the unsafe condition they were creating at the time.
